CHAPTER TWELVE

GWYN

By the time Dr. Tweedle and two attendants carrying a stretcher arrived at the cottage, Maggie had long since passed out. I’d managed to slow the bleeding to a small trickle. As I feared when I took the cloth off to check, I could see that her eye socket was mangled and empty. Where there had been an eye was now blood and bits of gore. My stomach churned, and I immediately covered it again before anyone else could see it.

As Dr. Tweedle examined Maggie, clucking her tongue in disappointment the entire time, we stood by and watched anxiously. She looked up at me at one point. “Were you the one who stopped the bleeding?”

I nodded.

“It’s good you did. She could’ve bled out.” She studied her wounds some more. “You said a bunch of birds did this?”

“Yeah, it was really weird. Lyon got a few nicks in the back.”

Lyon turned to show her. By now he’d turned back to human, and the injuries that had looked bad while he’d been a beast were now just a few minor scratches and pecks. He didn’t need any stitches or anything. The doctor just told him to clean them up with soap and water.

The attendants gently put her onto the stretcher and carried her out of the stone house and back to the school. They had to go around to the front gate. We weren’t about to show them how to get over the fence.

While Maggie went to the infirmary where she’d get proper care, we were all ushered to the Headmaster’s office to await our punishment for going against a whole slew of school rules. Rules that I didn’t know about or, for that matter, care about.

We lined up in a row in his office.

“I’m told,” the Headmaster started, standing behind his desk and looming over all of us, “that Margaret has lost her eye and that she’s lucky to be alive.” He folded his hands together at his waist. “Does anyone want to tell me why you were out in the woods? Why you left the school grounds without permission and went to a place that is forbidden to go?”

Heads lowered. Everyone kind of shuffled from one foot to the other and didn’t speak. I could see Alarick’s hands balling into fists at his sides. It looked like he was trying to rein in his anger or something. The guy did have a sharp edge to him.

“Someone better say something or your punishment will be doubled. No outside privileges for the rest of the term. No attendance at any extracurricular events, like the Spring Equinox dance this evening. Custodial duties for a month.” His eyes narrowed. “I could keep going. I’m sure I could think of more things to take away and more work to add.”

I gave Alarick the side-eye. He was looking down at the floor like the rest of them. I didn’t think any of them would budge. They were too loyal to each other, and now they had these secret powers to conceal.
